Know your fright: Scary 'Simpsons' episodes

The Simpsons

"The Simpsons" annually present an installment of "Treehouse of Horror."

“Bart Simpson’s Dracula” (Treehouse of Horror IV)

You may remember this premise from such films as: “Bram Stoker’s Dracula.”

In case you forgot: Despite Lisa’s misgivings, the Simpson family graciously accepts Mr. Burns’ invitation to a midnight dinner at his country house in ... Pennsylvania. Bart becomes a vampire. Homer drives a stake through his boss’ groin.

Best quote ever: “Another local peasant has been found dead. Drained of his blood with two teeth marks on his throat. This black cape was found on the scene. Police are baffled.” -- TV’s Kent Brockman

Screen direction that makes me want to go home and watch Simpsons DVDs: Burns walks off, but his shadow plays with a yo-yo.

“Clown without Pity” (Treehouse of Horror III)

You may remember this premise from such films as: “Child’s Play,” oh, and a "Twilight Zone" episode.

In case you forgot: Homer forgets Bart’s birthday and rushes out to an evil gift shop to pick up a talking Krusty the Klown doll and some frozen yogurt, both of which are cursed. Krusty spends the segment trying to kill Homer with weapons, including a harpoon, a knife and dog water, but only buries the hatchet with him metaphorically -- after Marge calls customer service and learns that the doll needs to be switched from “evil” to “good.”

Best quote ever: “The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughin' at me!” -- Homer.

Screen direction that makes me want to go home and watch Simpsons DVDs: Bottomless pit rejects nude Whoopi Goldberg photos.

“Time and Punishment” (Treehouse of Horror V)

You may remember this premise from such Ray Bradbury stories as: “A Sound of Thunder.”

In case you forgot: Homer attempts to repair a toaster with a rock but turns the device into a time machine that sends him to prehistoric times. Efforts to avoid touching anything fail, creating Butterfly Effects that include: Ned Flanders as overlord, a world without doughnuts (but with doughnuts for rain), and the Simpsons house turning into a McDonald’s.

Best quote ever: “This is indeed a disturbing universe.” -- Maggie Simpson, voiced by James Earl Jones, after she thwacks Groundskeeper Willie with an axe.

Screen direction that makes me want to go home and watch Simpsons DVDs: All the dinosaurs sneeze and die.

“The Devil and Homer Simpson” (Treehouse of Horror IV)

You may remember this from such stories as: “The Devil and Daniel Webster.”

In case you forgot: Homer sells his soul for a doughnut and goes before a Jury of the Damned featuring Blackbeard, the 1976 Philadelphia Flyers (shudder) and Richard Nixon (double shudder) in an effort to avoid spending eternity in Hell with Satan, played by Ned Flanders.

Best quote ever: “Arrgh! This chair be high, says I.” -- Blackbeard, on a high chair.

Screen direction that makes me want to go home and watch Simpsons DVDs: Attorney Lionel Hutz enters room, combing his hair with a fork.

“The Homega Man” (Treehouse of Horror VIII)

You may remember this from such films as: “The Omega Man.”

In case you forgot: Homer inadvertently survives a nuclear strike in a bomb shelter while looking for a Far Side, ahem, Gary Larson calendar joke that he gets. He fails to find one and emerges, seemingly, as the last man on earth. Naked church dancing and mutant encounters ensue.

Best quote ever: “But Aquaman, you cannot marry a woman without gills. You're from two different worlds! (Nuclear missile approaches.) Oh, I've wasted my life." -- Comic Book Guy

Screen direction that makes me want to go home and watch Simpsons DVDs: Laughs girlishly.
