"Backstage," an original musical, will be performed by S.T.A.G.E. Theatre June 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 7 p.m., and June 30 at 2 p.m. at the Pius X High School Performing Art Center, 60th and A streets.
This unique musical presents things from the backstage-forward, allowing the audience to see Broadway from an entirely different point of view.
Written and directed by Lee Hotovy, this comedy uses the talents of Rose Seeman and Mike Zeleny as music directors, along with the creative choreography of Karrie Seeman. Students, ages 9 through young adult, will present this lively piece where audiences can enjoy parodied versions of famous musicals including "The Phantom of the Opera," "Annie," "Newsies" and "The Music Man."
A “phantom” appears, haunting the theater and stealing props. Chaos ensues while cast and crew stumble through show after show with fewer and fewer props. To make matters worse, a demanding director and theater owner place an ultimatum on cast and crew: “Get along, or the place will close!” Roger, the backstage manager, and Barbara, the prop master, come to feathery blows before Emerson, a fired actor, steps in to help. Roger stews, while Barbara and Emerson find camaraderie through their love of props. Eventually, the trio discover the power of kindness and come up with a plan to save the show and the theater.
This musical will display humorous spoofs on musicals and teach a great lesson in kindness, based on the spiritual writings of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
