Christopher Marks will present two major organ symphonies by American composers — the second symphony of Edward Shippen Barnes (1887-1958) and the landmark Symphony in G by Leo Sowerby (1895-1968) — at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at First-Plymouth Church, 2000 D St.
The Schoenstein organ at First-Plymouth Congregational Church is ideally suited to this music, offering the wide range of color and dynamics needed to deliver these orchestrally conceived works.
Marks is a leading scholar and performer in American organ works of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is a professor in the Glenn Korff School of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he also is associate dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts and interim director of the Johnny Carson School of Theater and Film.
His performance is free and open to the public.
