Jackie Allen

Special guest jazz vocalist Jackie Allen sings at the Sing from the Heart dessert concert and charity fundraiser for the Sumner Place Music and Memory program.

The Arts for the Soul Music & Fine Arts Series at First Presbyterian Church held its annual Sing from the Heart dessert concert and charity fundraiser Feb. 17. This year the event took the theme of "Musical Memories" and featured the First Presbyterian Choir with conductor Dr. Brian Pfoltner and pianist Dr. Charles W. Ore. Special guest jazz vocalist Jackie Allen performed with Hans Sturm on bass and Tom Larson on piano.

The concert spotlighted the Music and Memory program at Sumner Place Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation. This national program trains nursing home staff, as well as other elder care professionals and family members in how to create and provide personalized playlists that enable those struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories. A freewill donation was taken, and over $1,300 was raised for the program.

In addition to the musicians, two speakers were at the event: Mollie George, programs specialist with the Alzheimer’s Association-Nebraska Chapter, and Monika Gall, life enrichment coordinator at Sumner Place.
