A friendly peacock hopped onto a picnic table where Matt and Jenny Geyer sat enjoying brats, chips and craft brews Aug. 11 at this summer’s second Brews at the Zoo fundraising event. It clearly hoped for a handout, but when the Geyers resisted, it glided off the table and moved on to the next one.
The Geyers were among over 13,000 guests who wandered throughout the zoo grounds and enjoyed watching animals, birds and reptiles at July 7 and Aug. 11 Brews at the Zoo events that raised over $54,000 for the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. The total included a generous U-Stop sponsorship, said John Chapo, zoo president and CEO.
This year was the first time the zoo hosted two Brews at the Zoo events during the same summer. Both events sold out, Chapo said.
“The revenue generated by events like Brews at the Zoo goes to taking care of our animals – everything from daily diets to veterinary care,” Chapo said. “The much-needed support guarantees great animal care all year long.”
As the name implies, Brews at the Zoo guests tasted craft brews by local Empyrean, Lucky Bucket, Thunderhead, White Elm and Zipline brewing companies. In addition, Glacial Till Vineyard offered wines and cider. Guests also enjoyed brats and burgers from the Safari Cafe, and live music by the AM/FM band.
Scott Kay of the Eagle 92.9 was master of ceremonies.
