Forget the rankings. Those things are never right, they say.

WC's South Sports Bar, seeded third of four teams in the South Lincoln regional when the Dive Bar Bracket Challenge launched three weeks ago, proved to be nobody's underdog.

"We never thought we were a No. 3," said Chuck Cheever, owner of the Nebraska 2 bar.

WC's is now No. 1, Lincoln's top dive bar, after collecting 64 percent of the vote to beat the Tack Room in the finals of the competition sponsored by Ground Zero.

WC's won four matches to win the competition, which featured 16 Lincoln-area bars.

"This is quite a three-week run that we've been on," Cheever said. "It's been a lot of fun checking my phone to see the updated scores. We got a little nervous on Saturday afternoon and started making calls to people to get online and vote.

"Rally the vote, that's what we've been doing the last couple of weeks."

After coming from behind on the last day to edge Roca Tavern by a handful of votes in the opening round, WC's responded with resounding victories over regional top seeds Grapevine Bar (South), Harry's Wonder Bar (Downtown) and the Tack Room (Cornhusker).

Cheever will celebrate this victory. He's planning a big Best Dive Bar party at WC's on Friday night and looks forward to his bar defending its title next year.

"The underdog has spoken," he said. "Are you going to make us a No. 3 seed again next year?"
