This probably comes as no shock: Honest Abe’s Burgers & Freedom is my pick for best burger. Picking the other burger places was more difficult.
My top picks are followed by readers' favorites in the slideshow. More than 900 readers took part in our online poll, with Abe’s as the overwhelming No. 1, grabbing 37 percent of the vote. The race for second was heated.

1. Honest Abe's

1. Honest Abe’s Burgers & Freedom, 840 N. 70th St. and 126 N. 14 St. -- Locally owned and operated, Abe’s also changes its menu frequently and even runs contests for diners to create their own burgers.
What sets Abe’s apart? The stuff it puts on its 6-ounce patties. Two of my favorites are The Aphrodite (pickled red onions, cucumber and feta yogurt sauce, tomato chutney and baby spinach) and the 1809 (smoky honey mayo, pickled apples, gouda and bacon).
2. Single Barrel

2. Single Barrel, 130 N. 10th St. -- I’m curious to know how chef Brandon Harpster seasons his burgers. The flavor to Single Barrel’s burgers is quite something.
3. HF Crave

3. HF Crave, 4800 Holdrege -- The appeal here is that Crave’s beef is Nebraska-raised at Hollenbeck Farms in Elmwood. The restaurant also has one of my favorite type of burgers, a Frisco served on sourdough.
4. LeadBelly

4. LeadBelly, 301 N. Eighth St. -- I go here for the Full Leaded Jacket, a burger served on a cinnamon roll with chili and more goodies. It’s a house staple for good reason.
