Payless ShoeSource is the latest retailer to announce it's going out of business.

The Topeka, Kansas-based retailer started liquidation sales at all of its 2,100 remaining stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico on Sunday after announcing Friday it was going out of business.

All of the stores will remain open until at least the end of March, and the majority will remain open until May.

Payless has six locations in Lincoln, but four of them already were scheduled to close because they are inside Shopko stores, and the chain is closing all of its Lincoln locations. The remaining standalone locations are at Gateway Mall and at 4620 N. 27th St.

The closure of the Payless stores will add more vacant space to the Lincoln real estate market, which has seen Toys R Us, Younkers, Gap, Yankee Candle, Beauty Brands and Rogers Jewelers close stores.

In the next couple of months, Lincoln also will lose Shopko and Sears.
