Nelnet has hit a snag in its plan to acquire a competitor.

The Lincoln-based company said Thursday that the U.S. Department of Justice has requested additional information related to its pending acquisition of Great Lakes Educational Loan Services Inc.

Nelnet announced in October that it planned to purchase the student loan-servicing company, which is a division of Great Lakes Higher Education Corp., for $150 million.

At the time, Nelnet said it expected to complete the transaction in January, but that seems unlikely now.

In a news release, Nelnet said the deal cannot close until at least 30 days after the companies comply with the new request for additional information.

Nelnet did not say what information was requested, but it did say both it and Great Lakes have been cooperating fully with the Justice Department in its review of the deal and will continue to do so.
