Lincoln ranked No. 7 in SmartAsset's ranking of the best cities to live on a $55,000 salary.

If you earn around $55,000 a year, close to the average U.S. household income of $55,775 n 2015, then Lincoln is one of the top places to live, according to a report from personal finance website SmartAsset.

The report looked only at cities where the median income is between $50,000 and $60,000 and took into account factors such as median housing costs, the quality of local healthcare, the percentage of income going to housing and the unemployment rate.

Lincoln came in seventh on the list, largely thanks to low housing costs and a short commute time relative to other cities in the study.

Plains cities generally fared well, with Bismarck, North Dakota, Billings, Montana, and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, taking the top three spots. Omaha came in 22nd.
