A Nebraska excavating company has been fined $106,078 for a safety violation federal investigators say contributed to injuries in a trench collapse in November.

Two workers were rescued from a trench in northwest Lincoln that collapsed on Nov. 21, trapping one man up to his waist and the other up to his knees, Lincoln Fire & Rescue officials said at the time.

The workers were repairing a fiber optic cable near Northwest 56th and Aurora streets.

Following an investigation, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited T.H. Construction Co. for failing to use protective systems to prevent the collapse.

OSHA announced the penalties in a news release on Wednesday.
