Prairie Orthopaedic & Plastic Surgery, 4130 Pioneer Woods, Suite 1, in Lincoln, is proud to announce the addition of Lincoln native, Dr. Matt Byington, a new area orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopy. Born and raised in Lincoln, Dr. Matthew Byington, DO, is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with advanced fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He specializes in the non-operative and operative treatment of joint pain, sports-related injuries as well as knee, shoulder and elbow conditions.
Dr. Byington treats all conditions of the knee, including joint pain, arthritis, ligament injuries, cartilage damage and joint instability. He has comprehensive training in joint reconstruction, meniscus repairs, ligament reconstruction, cartilage restoration, patella instability procedures, partial and total joint replacement, as well as revision surgery. Dr. Byington has developed an emphasis on shoulder joint pain, rotator cuff tears, labrum injuries, instability and arthritis. He has extensive experience ranging from minimally invasive arthroscopic repairs to fracture care to reverse and total shoulder replacement.
Dr. Byington earned his medical degree from Midwestern University in Chicago and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Michigan State University. He went on to complete fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at the world-renowned Orthopaedic Research of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia. While in his residency and fellowship, he participated in the care and treatment of student-athletes from the area high schools to the collegiate level, including Michigan State University Spartans and the University of Richmond Spiders.
Dr. Byington started practice in 2013 in Omaha and Fremont, where he served as the medical director of sports medicine at Fremont Health and as team physician for Midland University Athletics (the state of Nebraska's largest collegiate athletic department) and several area high schools. Dr. Byington joined the Prairie Orthopaedic & Plastic Surgery team in Spring 2017.
Dr. Byington comes from a family of medical professionals, with five physicians in his family, including his father, Dr. Robert Byington (ob-gyn) and uncles, Dr. Don Walla (orthopaedic surgeon) and Dr. Lew Birkmann (neurology) all of whom practice in the Lincoln community. Dr. Byington knew from a young age that he wanted to follow in their footsteps.
"Career aspiration: Orthopaedic surgeon" is found next to his name in his junior high year book from St. Joseph's Catholic School (Lincoln). He graduated Lincoln Pius X High School in 1996. He competed for the Creighton University cross country team before transferring and receiving his undergraduate degree in 2000 from Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU). At NWU, he was a three-time NCAA national champion and All-American in the 800 meter run for the track and field team, where he still holds numerous school records. Additionally, he was a multi-time NCAA Academic All American. After college, he went on to run track professionally with the world-famous Santa Monica Track Club. He trained alongside many U.S. Olympians including Carl Lewis (nine-time Olympic gold medalist), Johnny Gray (American record holder, Olympian, US champion 800 meter run) and Khadevis Robinson (multi-time Olympian and US champion 800 meter run).
Dr. Byington stays active through running and playing golf. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Amberly (Divis), a physical therapist with an orthopaedic specialization. They are excited to be back home around family and friends to raise their three young children in the community where they grew up. Dr. Byington and Amberly credit the supportive Lincoln community for providing them the foundation to achieve their career aspirations and successes.
