Whether you’re a high school student looking to enroll after graduation or a nontraditional (adult) student returning to college, selecting the right school takes time and research. To help cement your decision, visit the campus you’re considering.
Southeast Community College, with campuses in Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford, Nebraska, offers prospective students multiple options to visit, including group and individual tours, Career Days and Discovery Days.
“Prospective students can visit with family, a friend or alone,” said Emily Heathcock, admissions outreach specialist. “It’s whatever works best for them.”
Matching students’ interests and support needs
Southeast Community College staff set up individualized tours based on a prospects’ area of interest. “We actually get a faculty member to have a meeting specifically about the program,” Heathcock said. “Prospective students can ask questions about what it is like to be a student in that program, how much they do in class versus in the lab, things like that.”

A student ambassador takes the visitor on a campus tour. “The neat part is they’re also seeing the student support Southeast Community College offers them, so they know once they get here, they’re going to be taken care of,” Heathcock said.
An advisor helps prospective students determine their course load. Additional support for students includes testing services, free tutoring, free mental health counseling and a wellness area for working out.
Student housing is available on the Beatrice and Milford campuses. A new residence hall will open on the Lincoln Campus in January 2024.
After their tour, visitors meet with an admissions counselor one-on-one for help with next steps, including how to apply for financial aid. “That is super helpful because you’re not just getting the general information you find on the website, you’re getting what you might need to know specifically if you’re going to be a student here,” said Heathcock.
Discover college life
Discovery Days, offered four times a year on each campus, are opportunities to experience Southeast Community College firsthand. Prospective students learn about SCC programs, how to pay for college, support services, housing, and campus activities. In addition to a campus tour, lunch is provided.
“They also get to hear from faculty and student panels where they can ask questions,” Heathcock said.
Hands-on career experience
At SCC Career Days, students can learn more about careers in manufacturing, construction, agriculture, transportation, and healthcare. Heathcock called Career Days “probably my favorite because participants get to do hands-on, interactive activities.” Visitors might do some electrical wiring or operate the arm of an excavator to get a tangible look at a potential career.
Consider all your options
Prospective students may want to visit more than once, and check out other campuses, Heathcock advised. “You want to make sure you feel like this is where you belong, and the campus has things you want so you have a really good college experience,” said Heathcock.
Heathcock noted that Southeast Community College is an option for students who may ultimately complete their education elsewhere. “Students should still consider picking up affordable credits here through academic transfer to save money on the overall cost of school,” Heathcock said.
