Five Guys Burgers and Fries is closing its downtown location at 1230 P St. on Wednesday

Lincoln's original Five Guys Burgers and Fries location is closing.

Ryan Funke, who owns the location at 1230 P St. as well as several others in Lincoln and Omaha, said the restaurant's last day will be Wednesday, and it will close its doors at 2 p.m.

"The store had been underperforming for quite some time and we were near the end of the lease, so we decided it was time to close," Funke said in an email.

Chris and Kayleen Harmel opened the downtown Five Guys in 2010.

Funke, who owns several restaurants and bars in Lincoln, bought the franchise rights for Five Guys in Lincoln and Omaha in 2013 and said at the time that the downtown restaurant was struggling.

He eventually opened two more restaurants in Lincoln -- at 2525 Pine Lake Road and at Gateway Mall.

Funke said those locations as well as three in Omaha are "doing well" and will continue to operate.
