Friday: Waterloo 4, Lincoln 3
What went wrong: The Black Hawks netted two power-play goals in a span of 1 minute, 4 seconds midway through the third period to build a 4-2 lead, and the Stars couldn't complete the comeback. Waterloo finished 2-for-3 on the power play, while Lincoln converted just one of its four chances.
What went right: Twice Lincoln rallied from an early deficit to tie the game. After Waterloo took a 1-0 lead just 3 minutes, 20 seconds into the game, Stars defenseman Wyatt Aamodt tied the score just over 1:30 later when he put in a rebound in right circle. After Waterloo took a 2-1 lead just over midway through the second period, Devlin McCabe found the equalizer with his power-play goal.
Dominick Mersch pulled Lincoln within one, 4-3, on his rebound goal with just under 3 minutes to play. But Lincoln's potential game-tying goal was called back less than a minute later. The Stars outshot the Black Hawks 32-31 and Tomas Vomacka made 27 saves in the loss.
Next: The Stars close their three-game weekend with Saturday's 7 p.m. game at Sioux City.
Slap shots: Former Lincoln forward Vinni Lettieri scored a goal for the New York Rangers in his NHL debut Friday night. Lettieri played 76 games with the Stars between 2011-13 before going on to play for Minnesota in college. He signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Rangers following his senior season and was called up Thursday. His goal Friday gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead early in the third period of a 3-2 shootout loss to Detroit.
