Connie Yori's first assistant coach at Nebraska is now also her latest hire.
The Nebraska women's basketball head coach announced Wednesday that Amy Stephens is returning as a Husker assistant coach.
"I'm so excited to be back at Nebraska," Stephens said.
The former Alliance High School standout who played for NU from 1986-89 still is among Nebraska leaders in points, assists and steals. She's fourth on the career scoring list with 1,976 points, and rejoins Yori after serving as an assistant in 2002-03. Stephens was head coach at Drake for nine seasons, beginning in 2003.
Stephens spent last season as the associate head coach at Memphis, and the year before was an assistant at Saint Louis. She'll coordinate Nebraska's defense.
Stephens was the first assistant coach hired by Yori in 2002, one day after Yori was officially named NU coach. Stephens had spent the previous eight years at Nebraska-Kearney, where she took the Lopers to seven consecutive NCAA Division II Tournaments.
Stephens replaces Sunny Smallwood, Yori's longtime assistant who left last month to take a position at her alma mater, Boise State.
