Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst has made a key alteration in the day-to-day operations of the Husker football team.
Steve Waterfield, who joined the Nebraska athletic staff in July as a senior associate director, is now serving as the sports administrator for football. His duties include serving as a liaison between head coach Bo Pelini and Eichorst.
Nebraska associate athletic director Jamie Williams previously served as sports administrator for football, having been appointed in 2012 to oversee the sport by then-athletic director Tom Osborne. Eichorst kept Williams in the role upon taking over as AD in January of 2013, before recently moving Waterfield into the position.
According to the NU web site, Williams' official title is associate AD/leadership, student-athlete recruitment and diversity initiatives.
Eichorst essentially oversees all sports, including football, but uses senior managers to assist with day-to-day operations, according to a spokeswoman. He has made a couple other adjustments in sport supervisors since he took over.
NU officials declined comment as to why Waterfield was moved into the football role.
Waterfield's official title is senior associate athletic director for performance and strategic research. He reports directly to Eichorst, as does Williams.
Waterfield previously served as a senior administrator at the University of Miami, Eichorst's former employer. Waterfield has also spent time in the Big Ten at Wisconsin (under athletic director Barry Alvarez) and Ohio State.
