Future Husker: Peyton Newell
My school: Hiawatha, Kan.
Position: Defensive linemen.
This week: Hiawatha has a 2-2 record going into Friday’s game against Nemaha Valley (Seneca, Kan.). In a 12-10 loss against Class 4A No. 1-ranked Holton last week, Newell had 10 tackles, three tackles for loss and a blocked PAT.
Highlight play: “Against Holton, outside of me was a tight end and a slot back. I was double-teamed, and they did a toss and I shut off the double-team and made a tackle for a 3-yard loss on a toss play.”
Other sports: Newell played basketball in the past, and tried track and field for fun last year, including being a rare 265-pound long jumper. “I got a few goofy looks. A whole bunch of people walked over to watch (the long jump). I had no technique. I figured out that track is all technique. I think I might have got sixth place.”
The college life
Projected position at NU: defensive tackle.
First contact with the Huskers: “The first person I talked to was (defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski) when they offered me. The process got really busy early. TCU offered, and then the next night, Iowa offered, and then three weeks later, I think I had 15 offers. I think Nebraska was my seventh or eighth offer. I didn’t really pay attention to it, and then I went up to Big Red Weekend. Coach Kaczenski formed a relationship with me right off the bat, and he’s one of the main reasons why I’m going there.”
My final schools: Nebraska, South Carolina, Kansas, Kansas State, USC, Georgia.
Date committed: Aug. 30, 2013.
If I wrote my recruiting profile
Wt: 280 pounds
Mel Kiper would say: “Someone who doesn’t let his size affect his playing ability. Is as quick as linebacker, and at the end of the summer squatted 700 pounds and benched 400 pounds.”
All-time favorite Husker: “Of course I’m going to say (Ndamukong) Suh, just because I’m going to try and be like him.”
Exercise I hate the most: “I definitely don’t like pull-ups. Just with my weight, I can’t really do them. I can bench 400 pounds, but I can only do like two pull-ups.”
Favorite pro team: “I’m not going to say the Chiefs, just because they’re doing good. I’ve always kind of been a Chicago Bears fan. My grandpa lives up there, so he always sends me Bears jackets and stuff like that for Christmas.”
