Getting to know the players who will soon grace Nebraska’s sideline.

High school

My school: Santa Margarita Catholic (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.).

Position: quarterback.

This week: Santa Margarita (2-0) plays Trabuco Hills on Friday in Mission Viejco, Calif. Some Husker fans are planning to attend the game.

Of note: Last year, Stanton rushed for 1,500 yards with 25 touchdowns and passed for 2,400 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has four touchdown passes this season.

Other sports: basketball.

The college life

Projected position at NU: quarterback.

First contact with the Huskers: “I remember last year getting letters saying what the week’s opponent would be — I still get those now — and I think I got a few letters my sophomore year. The first time I really had direct contact is when I went to their campus for football camp last summer, and a few days after that they offered me.”

My final three schools: Nebraska, Oregon and Wisconsin.

Date committed: July 9, 2012.

My career at Nebraska will be a success if …: “I have the same goals that every college player does in America, to try and win a national championship. I think that’s the goal you have to have playing in a great conference and playing against great opponents.”

Of note: After this week, Stanton will have attended two Nebraska games, both in his home state. He was at the 2010 Holiday Bowl in San Diego, when Washington beat Nebraska, and is planning to attend Saturday’s game against UCLA.

If I wrote my own recruiting profile

Ht: 6-foot-2

Wt: 220

Mel Kiper would say: “One of the more competitive players around. Hard worker and great competitor who is always going to try to get better.”

Rivals.com says three-stars: “I recognize certain (recruiting) sites like me more than others. I don’t really care too much about it. I’m committed, so it doesn't really matter anymore.”

Of note: Stanton was one of 25 high school player invited to the Elite 11 quarterback competition last summer, and was No. 8 in the final rankings.

Quick hits

Childhood hero: “I’ve always liked Johnny Unitas. I’ve always been a fan of the old-school players. I have a Unitas jersey.”

QB I’ve been compared to …: “I’ve had the comparison to Tim Tebow, and I think that he’s a great football player. I think he gets more criticism than he deserves.”

Most prized possesion: A necklace received for confirmation.
