The fourth annual Journal Star Area Prep Sports Awards banquet was held Wednesday night at the Champions Club in Lincoln.

Thirty-one athletes were crowned winners, including Lincoln Christian's Ashlyn Power, who repeated as girls athlete of the year. 

Lincoln Southwest's Olivia Calegan became a three-time winner in girls swimming and diving, and Grand Island's Matthew Novinski a two-time winner in boys swimming. Lincoln Southwest's Will Gleason (boys tennis), Lincoln Southwest's Hannah Davis (girls soccer), York's Karlee Seevers (softball) and Lincoln Southeast's Fidan Ibrahimova (girls tennis) also became two-time winners.

Former Centennial wrestler Doyle Trout, the keynote speaker, spoke about using elements of sports, like perseverance and hard work, to overcome adversity.

Former Journal Star sports writers Ken and Ryly Jane Hambleton were recognized for their service in coverage of prep sports, and helped hand out awards to winners of the first Ken and Ryly Jane Hambleton High School Sports Journalist honor.

Here were the nominees and winners:

Boys athlete of the year: Cameron Jurgens, Beatrice; Noah Vedral, Bishop Neumann; Austin Schultz, Norris. Winners: Jurgens and Vedral.

Girls athlete of the year: Ashlyn Power, Lincoln Christian; Caelyn Christiancy, Lincoln Southwest; Madison Jurgens, Diller-Odell. Winner: Power.

Boys coach of the year: Lynn Jurgens, Wilber-Clatonia (football); Mike Weiss, Bishop Neumann (basketball); Doug Goltz, Falls City SH (football and basketball). Winner: Jurgens.

Girls coach of the year: Nick Orduna, Lincoln Christian (basketball); Jeff Romp, Lincoln Southwest (basketball); Tera Stutheit, Johnson-Brock (volleyball). Winners: Orduna and Romp.

Baseball player of the year: Austin Schultz, Norris; Isaiah Peterson, Lincoln Southwest; Max McGuire, Lincoln Southwest. Winner: Peterson.

Boys basketball player of the year: Jaxon Simons, Bishop Neumann; Noah Vedral, Bishop Neumann; Malcolm Whitlow, Lincoln Northeast. Winner: Simons.

Girls basketball player of the year: Chloe Dworak, Lincoln Christian; Michaela Jones, Beatrice; McKenna Minter, Lincoln Northeast. Winner: Dworak.

Boys cross country runner of the year: Tyler Boyle, Lincoln Southwest; Jose Gonzalez, Fremont; Tyler Taubenheim, Lincoln Pius X. Winner: Gonzalez.

Girls cross country runner of the year: Cameron Hucke, Hastings SC; Chloe Heller, Lincoln Southeast; Diana Lado Andrea. Winner: Hucke.

Football player of the year: Carson Walters, Lincoln East; Trevor Nichelson, Ashland-Greenwood; Noah Vedral, Bishop Neumann. Winner: Walters.

Boys golfer of the year: Tyler Crandon, Lincoln Southeast; Patrick Clare, Lincoln East; Nate Vontz, Lincoln Southwest. Winner: Clare.

Girls golfer of the year: Kendra Placke, Seward; Kirsten Baete, Beatrice; Lidia Jons, Lincoln Southwest. Winner: Baete.

Boys soccer player of the year: Nolan Dillon, Fremont; Johnny Hansen, Lincoln East; Jonathan Velasquez, Lincoln North Star. Winner: Velasquez.

Girls soccer player of the year: Hannah Davis, Lincoln Southwest; Gwen Lane, Lincoln Southwest; Tiannah Moore, Lincoln Northeast. Winner: Davis.

Softball player of the year: Karlee Seevers, York; Courtney Sandell, Malcolm; Emma Kauf, Lincoln Southwest. Winner: Seevers.

Boys swimmer/diver of the year: Matthew Novinski, Grand Island; Nolan Reid, Lincoln Southwest; Joshua Roh, Lincoln East. Winner: Novinski.

Boys track and field athlete of the year: Jon Flight, Wahoo; Cameron Jurgens, Beatrice; Caleb Brown, Lincoln High. Winner: Flight.

Girls track and field athlete of the year: Caelyn Christiancy, Lincoln Southwest; Aspen Rolfes, Lincoln Pius X; Madi Muma, Lincoln East. Winner: Rolfes.

Volleyball player of the year: Madison Jurgens, Diller-Odell; Ashlyn Power, Lincoln Christian; Jaela Zimmerman, Malcolm. Winner: Zimmerman.

Wrestler of the year: Cole Krecklow, Wahoo; Chance Fry, Lincoln Southeast; Connor Clanton, Lincoln Southwest. Winners: Clanton and Fry.
