Kyler Reed always kind of knew this was how it was going to end up.

His father, Kenny, grew up in Omaha, a Husker rooter.

Kyler grew up a Kansas boy, but still had a thing for those guys in red.

“They’ve been a team I’ve rooted for ever since I started watching college football,” he said on Tuesday, minutes after giving an oral commitment to play at Nebraska.

The 6-foot-3, 213-pound athlete out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Overland Park, Kan., becomes Nebraska’s 22nd oral commit for the 2008 class.

The original talk was that he’d play linebacker here, though he said Husker Coach Bill Callahan has recently expressed interest in playing him at H-Back (tight end).

Though he hasn’t been officially clocked, he says his 40-yard time is about 4.5 seconds. Kansas, Kansas State and Northwestern were the other schools on his short list.

Reed, rated as a 3-star by both Scout.com and Rivals.com, said it was Husker defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove who primarily recruited him. His decision was sealed after he visited Lincoln on Saturday for the USC game.

“When I got down there, I got such a warm welcoming, especially from the fans,” Reed said. “It felt like I was home.”
