The Nebraska softball team left 29 runners on base Friday in two opening-day losses at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.
The No. 21-ranked Huskers opened pool play with a 4-1 loss to Tennessee Tech and then lost a 2-1, nine-inning game to No. 20-ranked Florida State.
Against FSU, Nebraska senior pitcher Ashley DeBuhr kept the Huskers in the game with both her hitting and pitching.
DeBuhr took a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning before disaster struck. The right-hander then gave up two runs, both on solo homers, to end the game.
In the top of the inning, DeBuhr hit a two-out RBI-single, scoring Jamie Waldecker with the go-ahead run.
Tennessee Tech jumped out early against the Huskers, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.
The Huskers, who had 13 baserunners in the game, put a runner on in every inning. In five of the innings, the leadoff batter got on base.
Molly Hill took the loss, giving up four hits, while striking out 14.
Waldecker scored the Huskers only run, a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
