True freshman Harrison Beck, No. 3 on the depth chart, is the most physically gifted quarterback on the roster, Dennis Wagner said Friday.
“But just like anything else, sometimes it’s not just about talent,” the Nebraska offensive line coach told a crowd of about 200 at the Big Red Breakfast in Omaha.
“Harrison’s huddle management has to get better. When you step into the huddle, you have to call plays, you have to command respect, you have to get guys going, you’re the manager of the clock — you have to get in and out of the huddle. Those are all things he’s still dealing with and trying to get better at.”
Husker coaches will delay a redshirt decision regarding Beck as long as possible, Wagner said.
“If something happens this season, whether Zac gets hurt or we don’t feel we have the spark we need and we feel we have to make a move, then we’ll do that,” Wagner said. “Harrison’s prepared to play.”
Redshirt freshman Joe Ganz remained No. 2 on the two-deep chart released Tuesday.
— GLENN TO FULLBACK: Touted true freshman I-back Cody Glenn, who hasn’t played this season, is practicing at fullback and may see time there against Pitt, Wagner said. “We’re going to start using him at fullback to improve us there.”
— JOIN THE CLUB: Freshman Matt Slauson, listed No. 2 at right tackle behind Seppo Evwaraye, “is going to be a heck of a football player,” Wagner said. “If he continues to progress, he’s going to challenge to be a starter.” The 6-foot-5, 340-pound Slauson, of Colorado Springs, Colo., on Wednesday broke two fingers in practice, but he’ll play this weekend with a protective club on his hand. “I’ll just have to teach him how to hold with a club,” Wagner joked.
— TOUCH YOUR TOES: Offensive tackle Brock Pasteur, a junior college transfer who is yet to play, needs to work on flexibility before he’s ready for game action, Wagner said. “Brock’s a really good football player,” the coach said. “He’s lifted so hard and he’s so strong, (but) he has no flexibility.” The 6-6, 290-pound Pasteur is likely destined for a redshirt, Wagner said, though no decision on redshirts will be made until after the Iowa State game.
— GIVE ME 10: Meanwhile, guard/tackle Jordan Picou needs to improve his strength before he’s ready to play, Wagner said. The 6-2, 320-pound Picou, also a juco transfer, has long arms and good feet, the coach said. However, “I knew we were in trouble the first day he practiced, and he had trouble doing 10 push-ups,” Wagner said.
— HELMING HEALED: Guard Jared Helming played about 25 snaps in the opener, but he injured a knee in practice last week and missed the Wake Forest game. He’s set to return against Pitt.
— ETC.: Freshman Craig Roark is practicing at center. … Senior tight end Matt Herian, recovering from a broken leg suffered last October, hasn’t practiced since. “He’s still in too much pain to be able to help us,” the coach said.
