After leading Nebraska to its second national championship in seven seasons, volleyball coach John Cook has been rewarded with a new contract.

Cook, who was working under a four-year deal signed in 2004, will receive a base salary of $190,000 plus incentives over the next five seasons. The deal goes through the 2011 fall season.

The 22.5 percent raise puts Cook on par with basketball coach Connie Yori, the highest-paid women’s coach at Nebraska last year at $185,000.

Cook’s 2006-07 base salary was $155,000.

“I wanted to reward him for a great performance, and I wanted to make sure he knew how much we wanted him here,” said athletic director Steve Pederson, adding that terms of the new deal were worked out soon after Nebraska defeated Stanford for the national title last December.

“It seemed appropriate to sit down and get that done quickly,” Pederson said.

Cook is 220-14 since taking over for Nebraska in 2000. In addition to their titles in 2000 and 2006, the Huskers also reached the national championship match in 2005 and have won the Big 12 Conference title five times.

Nebraska also ranks among the national leaders in attendance, with last season’s championship match at Qwest Center Omaha breaking the NCAA postseason record.

Cook’s new contract takes effect July 1.

Pederson said Wednesday that new contracts for many of Nebraska’s other head coaches will be worked out this summer, and that all of NU’s assistant football coaches have recently agreed to new two-years deals.

He said there was nothing new to report on a contract extension for football coach Bill Callahan, whose original six-year deal runs through the 2009 season, but stressed that it’s only a matter of time.

“We want him to be the coach here for a long, long time,” Pederson said.
