The Nebraska softball team, ranked 21st this week, is one of seven top 25 teams participating in this weekend’s NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga.

The Huskers (4-3) will face Tennessee Tech and No. 20 Florida State today, with games Saturday against Seton Hall and Mississippi State. The winners from each of the four pools will advance to Saturday’s championship bracket.

The Huskers took last weekend off after opening the season at the Paradise Classic in Honolulu. Senior pitcher Ashley DeBuhr was sharp, going 3-1 with a 0.82 ERA and striking out 35 in 252/3 innings.

However, Nebraska’s other two starters — sophomore Molly Hill and freshman Alex Hupp — allowed 28 baserunners in 221/3 innings. And offensively, Nebraska mustered two or more runs in only three games.

The bright spots offensively were junior college transfer Haley Long (.467, four RBIs) and sophomore Meghan Mullin (.348).

Other ranked teams in the Leadoff Classic field are No. 13 Michigan, No. 17 Baylor, No. 18 Georgia, No. 19 Florida and No. 25 Massachusetts.
