Zac Taylor returned to Lincoln on Monday morning from the NFL Combine and promptly took a six-hour nap.
“It’s a little stressful at first,” the former Nebraska quarterback said of the annual combine in Indianapolis at which college players go through a battery of physical and intelligence tests. “Once you get a feel for everything, it calms down. Once you loosen up, it’s a good experience.”
Four other 2006 Nebraska standouts participated in the invitation-only event — linebacker Stewart Bradley, running back Brandon Jackson and defensive ends Adam Carriker and Jay Moore.
Taylor was generally pleased with his performance.
“I didn’t run as well as I’d hoped,” he said, noting a 40-yard dash that he ran in “just over five seconds flat.” However, “I think they’d rather see me throw well than run well, and I thought I threw it well.”
Jackson also turned in a rather disappointing 40 clocking — 4.57 seconds.
“I know he’s run a :04.5 flat in the past, and I think he’s even run a :04.4-something,” said Jackson’s high school coach, Larry Gann of Horn Lake, Miss.
Jackson, though, was strong in other drills, for instance finishing fourth in his group in the 20-yard shuttle (:04.14) and sixth with an impressive 37-inch vertical leap.
Bradley, Carriker and Moore also turned in some strong performances.
The 6-foot-4, 254-pound Bradley ran the 40 in :04.69.
The 6-6, 295-pound Carriker raised eyebrows by running the 20-yard shuttle in :04.18. Tim Crowder, a 6-4, 270-pound former Texas standout, finished second in the defensive end group with a :04.32.
Moore, a 6-5, 275-pound Elkhorn native, ran the 40 in :04.92 and finished third in his group of linemen with a 34-inch vertical jump.
Each of Nebraska’s combine participants likely will take part in various drills at Nebraska’s annual on-campus “Pro Day” on March 7 at the Hawks Championship Center.
