According to the American Football Coaches Association, Southern Miss was one of 29 schools to have a football player graduation rate of 70 percent or higher for the recently completed academic year. The study involves the freshman class from 1998-99, including those who entered at that time but who did not receive financial aid until after their initial year, or who transferred from another school and subsequently received a grant-in-aid.
Southern Miss' graduation rate was 81 percent. Nebraska also was among the schools who earned recognition.
QUOTABLE: "From an intimidation standpoint, we will not be intimidated. Our kids feel like they can play against anyone in the country. After the first hit is when you find leaders." Southern Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix, who's watched the Golden Eagles give up just 265 yards and 185, respectively, in losses to Nebraska last year and in 1999.
