Weakside linebacker Bo Ruud, Nebraska’s second-leading tackler this season, will miss the Alamo Bowl after suffering a broken bone in his right arm during practice Sunday. The sophomore said his injury occurred with only four plays left in the practice.

“I caught it wrong, and it snapped,” Ruud said. “It happened on an ‘iso’ play. I hit the fullback, reached for the running back, and the fullback and running back caught me (in an awkward position). I heard it snap.”

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Ruud this season amassed 80 tackles (including 14 for losses), 10 quarterback hurries, six pass breakups and 21/2 sacks. The Lincoln Southeast graduate ended the season strongly, recording 15 tackles in Nebraska’s Nov. 12 win against Kansas State and six more in a Nov. 25 triumph at Colorado.

Although Ruud will miss the Dec. 28 Alamo Bowl, he expects to be ready to practice during the spring, albeit on a limited basis.

“As of now, I’ll be back by spring, but they might hold me out of contact,” he said.

Lance Brandenburgh, a sophomore from Overland Park, Kan., is listed No. 2 on Nebraska’s Alamo Bowl depth chart. The 6-1, 230-pound Brandenburgh was slowed by injury early in the season, missing four of the first five games. But his playing time increased as the season progressed and he finished the regular season with 17 tackles, including five for loss.

Brandenburgh played as a true freshman last season, with most of his action coming on special teams.

Ruud’s injury handed Nebraska its second major personnel loss of the weekend. On Saturday, Nebraska coach Bill Callahan announced that senior defensive end Wali Muhammad was suspended from the bowl because of an unspecified violation of team rules. Muhammad, a backup, had 20 tackles and four sacks this season.

Ruud is the third Nebraska outside linebacker to go down with a season-ending injury, joining Steve Octavien and Stewart Bradley.

Nebraska (7-4) will take Monday off from practice before resuming drills Tuesday in preparation for its Alamo Bowl matchup against Michigan (7-4).
