Nebraska’s first major scrimmage of spring drills Saturday took its toll on a few Huskers, most notably backup quarterback Harrison Beck.

The sophomore-to-be pulled a hamstring running away from hard-charging defensive end Adam Carriker. The soreness in Beck’s leg forced him to leave Monday’s workout early.

“Hopefully it won’t keep him out for very long,” said Nebraska offensive coordinator Jay Norvell.

Meanwhile, reserve quarterback Beau Davis sat out Monday with a high ankle sprain suffered Saturday, Norvell said. Davis wore a protective boot on his right foot and ankle.

“After a scrimmage, sometimes things get sore,” Norvell said. “We’ll just have to see in the next couple days how he responds.”

Wideout Chris Brooks also missed Monday’s practice with an undisclosed injury.

I-back Leon Jackson, who absorbed a crunching hit from safety Brandon Rigoni on Saturday, practiced Monday but limped at times. The Huskers worked out in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts after plowing through a scrimmage Saturday in which the run game was emphasized.

Monday’s workout marked the eighth of 15 spring practices.

“We banged them pretty good on Saturday, so you expect to get some bumps and bruises,” Norvell said. “We’ve been fortunate that we haven’t had anything major. We just want to continue to be able to scrimmage, because that’s when you really find out about players.”

STRONG INTERIOR: One of Nebraska’s points of emphasis entering spring practice was finding two new starters in the interior defensive line while also developing depth at those two positions. So far, so good. Defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove said seniors Barry Cryer and Ola Dagunduro and sophomores Ty Steinkuhler and Ndamukong Suh have been impressive. Cryer and Dagunduro are the starters at this point. Cosgrove’s strongest praise was for the 6-foot-2, 280-pound Cryer, who last season mostly played in passing situations. “He’s made a lot of improvement,” the coach said. “He had a heck of an offseason. He got bigger and stronger and more explosive, and I see that carry over to the practice field.” As for the defense’s overall progress, “We had fewer mental errors Saturday than we had had all spring,” Cosgrove said. “We just need more consistency right now. We’re striving for that every day.”

UP NEXT: Nebraska takes today off from drills before resuming practice Wednesday. On Friday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden is expected to be on hand at practice before speaking at the NU spring coaches’ clinic.
