The Lincoln Journal Star has confirmed that Nebraska pitching coach Rob Childress will be named the head baseball coach at Texas A&M.
An official announcement is expected later today.
A source with NU confirmed Childress' hiring on Wednesday afternoon, which also was reported on the Web site of the San Antonio Express-News.
Childress did not immediately return phone messages requesting comment.
Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson told the Lincoln Journal Star earlier Wednesday that he received a phone call from Texas A&M AD Bill Byrne prior to Tuesday's game asking for permission to speak with Childress once NU's season had ended.
Pederson granted permission to Byrne, who was the AD at Nebraska when Childress joined the staff in 1998 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2002.
The Huskers, making their third CWS appearance in Childress' eight seasons at NU, were eliminated Tuesday when Arizona State rallied for an 8-7 win in 11 innings.
Childress, a native of Gilmer, Texas, replaces Mark Johnson, who was fired after the Aggies finished ninth in the Big 12 Conference and missed the league's postseason tournament.
