Did that trick play for Nebraska’s go-ahead touchdown against Texas on Saturday look familiar?
It certainly did to Nate Swift. The Nebraska sophomore receiver scored on the same play — 98 Bronco — in last year’s game against Oklahoma.
The plays works particularly well against overpursuing secondaries intent on stopping the run. Nebraska runs what appears to be a toss sweep, the receiver sneaks by a cornerback and roams free in the secondary. The running back sells the run, then pulls up and lofts a pass to, in these instances, Swift.
The ball seems to hang forever in the air, and Swift calmly pulls it in.
Saturday, Marlon Lucky’s 25-yard touchdown pass to Swift gave No. 17 Nebraska a 20-19 lead against No. 5 Texas with 4 minutes, 54 seconds remaining.
“I was like, ‘OK, it’s kinda windy out, I hope he doesn’t throw it too hard with the wind and overthrow me,’” Swift said, noting Lucky hadn’t played many snaps to that point.
Against Oklahoma last year, Swift scored on an 18-yard pass from Cory Ross with 5:54 remaining. It pulled the Huskers within seven points of the Sooners.
“We sweep to the right, and I either cut or try to block down the corner,” Swift said. “I got over the top of the corner and the safety. It was a perfect pass and a perfectly timed play.”
Swift said coaches began practicing the play three or four weeks ago.
“With the way we run, with that sweep, any team is going to bust on the play,” Swift said. “It’s pretty tough not to bust.”
Nebraska had run some toss sweeps earlier in the game, and coach Bill Callahan noted the heavy pursuit by the Texas defense, particularly the secondary.
“Their secondary is outstanding, and they really bit on it and came up hard on the initial toss,” Callahan said. “The secondary support was all in place, and Nate slipped the corner outside when he filled the lane and came wide-open.”
Of course, the one problem with the play both times Nebraska’s run it: The Huskers still lost.
