Husker coach Bill Callahan didn't have many details when discussing the health of the numerous Nebraska players who left Saturday's 36-14 loss.
MENDING THE WOUNDED: Apparently no Husker suffered a season-ending injury Saturday against Texas A&M.
That’s about all we know.
Husker coach Bill Callahan didn’t have many details when discussing the health of the numerous Nebraska players who left Saturday’s 36-14 loss.
Asked specifically about the status of linebacker Bo Ruud, center Brett Byford and defensive lineman Brandon Johnson, Callahan said: “They’re seemingly OK right now. We’re just going to wait until we get a little bit more information and then decide if they’ll be able to go practice this week.”
Ruud’s injury was probably of most worrisome to Husker fans. The senior captain hurt his left knee on A&M’s first offensive play and did not return to the game.
Phillip Dillard also did not play much because of a quad injury. After the game, defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove said Dillard wasn’t 100 percent, but was ready to go if called upon.
“I just thought with the speed of the game, Corey (McKeon) could give us a little bit more,” Cosgrove said.
SWIFT SORROW: No one felt worse about A&M’s second touchdown Saturday than Nate Swift.
The normally sure-handed junior receiver fumbled a punt at the Nebraska 28-yard line in the early stages of the second quarter. The Aggies scored two plays later to make it 16-7.
“It has never happened to me before,” Swift said. “They put me back there to catch the punts and I did not do that.”
The Huskers had Swift and Andre Jones returning punts because Cortney Grixby had a thumb injury.
Swift felt the play was one of the major turning points in the game.
“We stopped them a couple times with our defense there, and we had gotten the ball back,” Swift said. “Going down and scoring would have been great, so I definitely think that was a big momentum swing.”
BY THE NUMBERS: 46. Number of years since Nebraska has lost four straight games. Coach Bill Jennings’ 1961 team ended that season 3-6-1, losing six of its last seven.
SCOUTING REPORT: RB Quentin Castille
Saturday was mostly a day of ups for the 255-pound freshman running back Quentin Castille. He carried the ball nine times for 60 yards, and scored a first-quarter touchdown.
There was one down in the second quarter. Castille fumbled after taking a hit in the backfield. Though he wasn’t using it as an excuse, he said he thought someone grabbed his facemask on the play.
After the fumble, Callahan kept Castille on the sideline for two series.
Castille admitted ball security was an issue for him during spring practices. He’s fumbled twice this year.
Still, Callahan passed on nothing but compliments to the youngster Monday.
“For a young player to come in and bring that style and that type of presence into your backfield says a lot,” Callahan said. “He’s a mature kid physically. He’s still growing up learning the system, but to his credit, we’ve given him a package of plays that he can deal with and have success with, and he’s adapted extremely well.”
Callahan likes Castille’s attitude almost as much as his running ability.
“He’s always upbeat and exciting. That’s what kind of keeps me going, when you’re around guys like him,” Callahan said. “It makes practice fun, and makes meetings a lot of fun when you got guys with that type of energy and enthusiasm.”
Opponent watch: Kansas
Basketball season? Who cares about basketball season right now?
Kansas’ 19-14 win against Colorado on Saturday gave the Jayhawks a 7-0 record for the first time since 1995.
“The KU of old is absolutely gone,” KU running back Jake Sharp told the Kansas City Star. “It’s not even in the back of our minds.”
The Jayhawks, who also beat Kansas State on the road, travel to A&M this Saturday before hosting the Huskers.
“Early in the season, people were saying, ‘Wait until they play on the road. They’ll fold,’” quarterback Todd Reesing told the Star. “This team, presented with any challenge, can rise to it and overcome it. All the talk about ‘can’t win on the road,’ that’s got to be over now.”
