Huskers snare another Texas recruit

OK, Eddie Brown will admit it. He loved those Aggies.

“My favorite school for a long time was A&M,” he says.

Notice the use of the word “was.” Past tense.

On Monday, the defensive tackle gave his allegiances to another, giving Nebraska coaches an oral commitment to play football for the Huskers.

Texas A&M did not offer Brown a scholarship and for that the Huskers give thanks. With signing day on Feb. 6, NU now has 19 commitments.

Brown says Husker coaches were “fired-up” when they heard the news.

And no wonder. This recruiting score follows the recent commitment of another Texan to the program. Alonzo Whaley, a linebacker from Madisonville, Texas, gave his word to Nebraska over the weekend and spoke about bringing back the Blackshirts.

Brown might be able to help out there.

He is 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds and has run the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds. Playing his high school ball in Waller, Texas, he was a standout as both a defensive lineman and a fullback.

As a senior, Brown  recorded 99 tackles, 12 sacks and an interception. On offense, he averaged almost 7 yards a carry and got into the end zone six times.

That’ll get you some scholarship offers, and they came: Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas Tech.

But ultimately, it was Nebraska. Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson was the primary recruiter of Brown.

On Monday, Husker head coach Bo Pelini, defensive coordinator Carl Pelini and Watson all showed up at Brown’s school to give him one last sales pitch.

Sold.

Said Brown: “I just liked the coaches and it’s some place I can see myself playing at.”
