Utah outrebounded Nebraska 41-28 in its 56-44 victory in Honolulu.
The Nebraska women’s basketball team had scouted Utah in its previous games at the Oahu Classic, and determined that rebounding would be the key to a Husker win.
But that wasn’t the case Saturday as NU lost its second straight game in Honolulu, 56-44 to the Utes.
Nebraska was outrebounded 41-28. The Utes finished with 36 defensive rebounds, while the Huskers grabbed six offensive boards.
“We felt like we could hurt them on the boards,” NU coach Connie Yori said on her postgame radio show. “But we’ve also got to shoot the free throws and field goals, especially the three-pointers.”
“We still feel like we could have won had we found a way to get some offensive rebounds.”
Nebraska (3-2) was 4-of-21 from three-point range, while Utah was just 2-for-6.
“We got played the same way tonight that we did yesterday (in a loss to Marist), and their point guard did well for them,” Yori said.
Kalee Whipple led Utah with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Morgan Warburton added 15. Leilani Mitchell was also in double figures with 13.
Nebraska was led by Kelsey Griffin with 11 points and six rebounds, while Kaitlyn Burke added seven points.
The Huskers will finish tournament play Sunday with a 4 p.m. game against Akron. The Zips are 1-1 in tournament play, with a win over Eastern Washington and a loss to Utah.
“We’re not going to change our focus (for Akron),” Yori said. “We just have to do a better job on the glass.”
