Union Bank picked the right time to shed its mid-summer blahs.

In a rematch of the Class B state baseball championship game, Union Bank (Lincoln Pius X) turned the tables on Omaha Gross to earn a 12-4 victory Friday in the Mike Peterson Baseball Tournament at Den Hartog Field.

Gross earned a 4-2 win over Pius X in the high school title game back in May.

Later Friday, Union Bank was leading North Platte 3-1 in the top of the second inning when that game was suspended because of rain.

Tournament games at all four sites were called because of lightning and wet grounds. Tournament officials said games slated for today would be played as scheduled. If the games from Friday night are needed to determine a team's finish in pool play, they will be resumed Sunday morning before the playoffs begin.

"The last week, our enthusiasm level was pretty down," said Union Bank coach Troy Charf. "We took the weekend off, although I'm not certain that helped.

"But the last couple of games, our guys have played with more enjoyment of the game."

Of course, it is easier to enjoy the game when you are having some success.

"I think every team goes through that during the summer with so many games," said Charf. "When you lose during those times of mental grinds, it's disheartening. And when you win, it becomes evident that you can break through.

"The last couple of games, we seemed to enjoy each other's company a bit more."

Union Bank scored six runs in the second inning, sparked by Dylan Oberembt's two-run triple. In a five-run fifth inning, Oberembt had another two-run triple and then scored on a double by Trevon McGill.

Brandon Nickolite struck out four and went the distance for the victory.

At Sherman Field, Pinnacle Bank (Lincoln Southwest) had jumped to a 4-0 lead when the rain and lightning ended play going into the top of the third inning.

Dain Sudik singled and advanced on an error and a hit by Adam Lavelle and then scored on a groundout by Mark Korsakas in the first inning.

Tanner Lubach walked to open the second, Duston Bloch singled and then Rylan Cotton reached on a bunt single. Ryan Haas drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and after Bloch scored on a wild pitch, Taylor Anderson plated another run with a groundout.

"I called for Rylan to drag bunt and try to beat it out and it was a very nice bunt," said Pinnacle coach Doug Kaltenberger. "As strong as Vince (Flynn, starting pitcher) looked, I thought he'd hold them at by and so I wasn't ready to sacrifice bunt."

Flynn had four strikeouts in two innings and two infield groundouts.

"Vince was dominating. He was changing speeds and locating right on the money," said Kaltenberger. "He threw 26 pitches, which is essentially like bullpen work. We're hoping he can come back tomorrow and pitch for us."
