The Nebraska baseball team ended its 10-game home stand Tuesday with an undefeated record after a 7-3 win against South Dakota State at Haymarket Park.
It was the 12th straight win at Haymarket Park, the longest win streak for NU since a 21-game string during the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
Nebraska scored its first run in the top of the first as DJ Belfonte doubled and scored on a wild pitch. The Huskers stretched the lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Mitch Abeita scored off an RBI single by Craig Corristan.
SDSU rallied to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the fifth before Nebraska went on a tear.
In the fifth, NU’s Jake Opitz connected on a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the inning to give NU a 4-2 lead.
The Jackrabbits got to within 4-3 on an RBI-single by Stephen Turner.
In the eighth inning, the Nebraska freshmen took control.
After freshman Brett Sowers had a pinch-hit single, putting runners on the corners with no outs, Dan Johnston and Ben Kline each hit run-scoring singles to give Nebraska a four-run lead.
NU also used four freshman pitchers in the game. Michael Mariot earned his first win in one inning of relief. The Huskers used seven pitchers in the game.
“I think the best thing that happened today was to see some good, young freshmen come out,” NU coach Mike Anderson said. “We were trying to get some pitching things done. A lot of these freshmen came out more composed than they were the last time.
“It was a good improvement, good to see. We started off a little slow offensively, but that’s one of our typical days.”
Nebraska travels to Manhattan, Kan., this weekend to open Big 12 play with a three-game series against Kansas State. First pitch Friday is set for 6:30 p.m.
