Area news: Sock gets invite to Aussie Open playoff

Lincoln native Jack Sock is one of eight American players to receive an invitation to play in the 2010 Australian Open Main Draw Wild Card Playoff Dec. 5-7 in Norcross, Ga.

The 17-year-old Sock is the only amateur player in the eight-man field.

The winner earns a spot in the main draw of the Australian Open in January.

VOLLEYBALL: The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament starts tonight with two matches at Creighton's Sokol Arena. Southern Illinois will face Wichita State at 6 p.m., following by Creighton's match with Drake. Semifinals are Friday with the championship on Saturday.

SOFTBALL: Lincoln North Star senior pitcher Paige Policky has signed a national letter-of-intent to compete at South Dakota beginning with the 2011 season. Policky, a senior left-hander, was named the co-captain of the Lincoln Journal Star Super State team and is a two-time Super State selection.

FOOTBALL: Nebraska-Kearney senior center Jack Hiett is one of eight finalists for the Gene Upshaw Division II Linemen of the Year Award.

SOCCER: Lincoln native Tyler Polak has been named a finalist for the young U.S. male soccer player of the year. Polak played on the FIFA U-17 World Cup team earlier this fall.

GO-KART RACING: Three days of indoor go-kart racing are scheduled this weekend at the Lancaster Event Center. The annual Turkey Chase starts Friday with racing at 6 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, racing is set for noon.
