Husker head coach Bo Pelini said offensive lineman Jaivorio Burkes will not play this year for undisclosed medical reasons. Is his Husker career over? Pelini did not know.
To no surprise, Pelini said Zac Lee is the "clear-cut favorite" for the starting quarterback job. As for the race to be Lee's backup, Pelini said Kody Spano, Cody Green and Latravis Washington were in a "three-way race." He said no redshirt decisions would be made prior to the season.
Pelini said Spano is 100 percent and has been going at full-speed much of the summer after tearing his ACL in the spring.
What about Phillip Dillard? He was down on the depth chart this spring? Pelini said everyone would have a chance to start and said: "I don't have a doghouse."
Pelini didn't get too specific on the subject of linebacker Matt Holt, but did say there was an injury that would have him sidelined.
Jacob Hickman, who switched between center and guard during the spring, said he will start the fall at center, which would make Ricky Henry a likely candidate to fill out the guard spot.
Probably not a surprise since Bill Snyder's back that someone asked Pelini about the heated words he had for Snyder after the game in 2003 when Kansas State beat NU 38-9 in Memorial Stadium.
"That's water under the bridge. That's not something I'm concerned about. I have a lot of respect for him. That's a mistake I made six years ago and that's the way it is," Pelini said.
The reporter asked a follow-up question. "That's a dead issue," Pelini responded.
Indeed, it seems that way. Bill Snyder spoke well of Pelini when Snyder visited Lincoln for a speaking engagement this summer.
