Tyler Evans, who plays quarterback and safety at Waverly High School, committed to Nebraska on Wednesday. A scholarship offer came in the morning from Barney Cotton and was accepted later that night.
"I tell you what, he is such a kid that kind of doesn't really like notoriety," Waverly coach Mike Johnson said. "But he was smiling from ear to ear."
Evans rushed for 897 yards and 14 touchdowns last year, and passed for 236 yards and two scores. On defense, he had 61 tackles and seven interceptions. He was the Journal Star's second-team Super State in both football and basketball (averaged 19.7 points per game and broke the school's single-season record). In track, he was first in the 100 in Class B (10.95 seconds).
Rated a two-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com, Evans had offers from Ohio and Princeton. He is a 4.0 student.
Evans attended Nebraska's "junior days" last week and obviously made an impression. He puts Nebraska back at five known commitments after receiver Keeston Terry made it known last week he was decommiting from NU and planning to go to Kansas.
Johnson said his initial impressions were that Husker coaches were interested in Evans as a receiver or defensive back.
