I’ve been following the tax reform debate and was disappointed, although not surprised, to see Sens. Ben Sasse and Deb Fischer vote in support of it.

News reports said that the GOP was pressured by its donors to pass something. If true, this is even more disappointing. Who do Sasse and Fischer and the rest of the GOP represent?

It doesn’t look like they represent the middle class, graduate students, teachers or 13 million Americans who will lose health care. As far as I can tell, the GOP represents corporations, the wealthy, the unborn and oil and gas interests.

Did you consider for a moment what a family in Lincoln, Norfolk or Scottsbluff would do with a tax cut? In most cases, they would spend it. And doesn’t that help the economy?

Giving tax cuts to corporations and to the wealthy won’t create jobs; workers won’t get raises. Historically, the trickle-down economy results in recessions. The trickle-down economy creates an economic disaster that Democrats are left to clean up.

This “sweeping tax reform” will hurt America for years to come. What’s next? Social Security? Medicare? Medicaid? Voting rights? How can this be good for hard-working Nebraskans and for America?

We are watching what’s happening in Washington. We are teaching ourselves about the issues. We are taking action. And we will be voting in 2018 and beyond.
