I support Mayor Chris Beutler's initiative to build a biofuels system using the city landfill.
I don't know how complicated, risky or speculative developing it will be, but I have confidence in city employees' ability to acquire the knowledge and skills they will need. They manage many complicated systems and keep our city running smoothly.
I am bothered by the expressed desire of private enterprise to own this system. I pay for the stuff I put in the garbage, and I pay to have it hauled to the landfill, which I also subsidize. I'm not hearing anyone saying they will pay me for my inputs.
With city ownership, taxpayers at least have the opportunity for relief from fuel costs of city-owned vehicles. We might even make money on tax credits. Any earnings can be plowed back into the system to defray future expenses.
We have done well with the publicly owned electric system. I believe we will be well served developing a publicly owned system to recycle our garbage.
