Nearly 2,000 guests attended the April 30 Copple Family YMCA open house, where they viewed and tried out facilities and equipment at the Y’s newest fitness center located at 84th and Yankee Hill Road in southeast Lincoln.
“We are so excited to finally be able to share the Copple Family YMCA with everyone,” said Barb Bettin, Lincoln YMCA president/CEO.
The 56,000-square-foot YMCA is attached to Marilyn Moore Middle School, which opens this fall. The YMCA/Lincoln Public Schools collaborative effort is modeled after the Fallbrook YMCA-Schoo Middle School partnership in northwest Lincoln.
The new Y’s design and construction were completed with input from YMCA and LPS staff members working with Clark Enersen Partners and Hausmann Construction Co.
“During the planning, they sat down with us and asked which things we love and which things we need to do differently in the design,” said Emmalie Wilcox, youth, teen and family program director at the Fallbrook YMCA. “That was so awesome that we were given that opportunity.”
Changes that resulted from the discussions include additional private family changing areas and additional lockers in the shared space between the Copple YMCA and Moore Middle School.
At the Copple open house, guests viewed and tried out the new indoor pool with aqua track and whirlpool, cardio and weight equipment, gyms, child watch center, preschool room, family/teen room and adult/youth locker rooms and private changing areas.
The Copple Family YMCA opening weekend included a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce April 28.
Outdoor pools at Copple Family, Cooper and Fallbrook YMCAs will open Saturday, May 27, weather permitting.
