BEATRICE — A recent Beatrice High School graduate was killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 2 p.m. when a 2005 Ford Escape driven by 18-year-old Shawn Vraspir of Beatrice was traveling westbound on West Lilac Road when he ran the stop sign at U.S. 77.

According to a news release from the sheriff's department, Vraspir’s vehicle was struck in the intersection by a northbound 2009 Ford F150 driven by 47-year-old Sadie Saunders of Topeka, Kansas. After the collision, Vraspir’s vehicle came to rest after hitting a house at 1852 W. Lilac Road, while Saunders’ vehicle stopped in the west ditch of U.S. 77.

Vraspir was pronounced dead at the scene, and Saunders was transported to Beatrice Community Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Seat belts were in use and airbags deployed in both vehicles. It has yet to be determined if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the accident, which is still under investigation.
