Nancy Tennant, Lewiston Consolidated School fourth-grade teacher, took a long walk after the power came on midafternoon Tuesday. She said "we didn't have school without the power, so I stayed warm in bed this morning. I had lots of candles and could have had a seance, if I knew how to do one!" As of 2 p.m. Friday, Norris Public Power District had restored power to all of its residential customers who lost power after Monday's snow storm.
Gov. Dave Heineman also signed a disaster declaration, allowing state resources to help Gage, Jefferson, Nemaha, Pawnee, Richardson and Thayer counties, which were the hardest hit.
The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency estimates more than $3 million in damage, which knocked down tree limbs and damaged power lines and poles.
More than 6,000 customers were without power at one point, including 4,200 Norris customers.
Emergency managers are assessing the damage and will coordinate with federal emergency management officials to determine whether thresholds have been met to trigger federal assistance.
Omaha Public Power District spokesman Jeff Hanson said Friday the district has less than 70 customers still without power.
"We're shooting to be done today," Hanson said.
