Divisions of the Nebraska Secretary of State's office will be scattered around downtown Lincoln by the beginning of February.
Several divisions of Secretary of State John Gale's office, including elections and business services, will relocate out of the Capitol at the end of January, Gale said Tuesday.
The divisions will move to an office building at 12th and N streets.
“The move does not take us very far from our current location in the state Capitol,” Gale said in a news release. “However, we want to be sure to get the word out to those who plan to visit our office in the coming weeks that several divisions will be in an entirely new location.”
Other services that are moving include licensing, rules and regulations, notary, accounting and information technology.
Gale’s office will remain in Room 2300 at the Capitol. The records management division will remain at Eighth and K streets, south of the Haymarket.
The move of those offices and other agencies from the Capitol is tied to an eight-year project to upgrade the heating and air conditioning system within the Capitol.
Gale said it has been a long-term goal to consolidate the secretary of state services on the ground floor in a modern business office with available parking, room to grow and accessibility for people who are disabled.
"This project helped make this goal a reality,” Gale said.
The office is busy this time of year with candidates coming in to file for statewide office, and businesses submitting their annual and biennial reports, he said.
The move is scheduled to take place Jan. 22-29. Business services, notary, licensing, rules and regulations, accounting and information technology will be at 1201 N St., Suite 120. The elections division will be housed next door at 1221 N St., Suite 103.
Gale advised anyone requiring the services of his office to check the website, www.sos.ne.gov, for updates as the scheduled move date gets closer.
Agencies, associations, vendors and others that work with the secretary of state's office will be notified by mail and email. And Gale will use his website and social media to help get the word out, he said.
Phone numbers for each of the divisions and all of the employees will remain the same, as will email addresses and post office box numbers, for mailing purposes. Those can also be found on the secretary of state’s website. The main office number at 402-471-2554.
