A special election by mail has been scheduled for Dec. 12 to fill three vacancies on the Elmwood Village Board in Cass County.

Three of the five members of the board recently resigned, prompting Secretary of State John Gale to call for an election as authorized by state law when half or more of the seats on a city council or village board are vacated.

Five candidates filed for terms that would end in December 2018 -- Kathleen Goerlitz, Tony Graff, Brandon Collins, Miki Bruns and Terry Carlton. Voters will choose two board members from the list, according to Cass County Election Commissioner Nancy Josoff.

One candidate, Trenton Shrader, filed for the single term that ends in December 2020.

Josoff said her office will mail ballots on Nov. 20 and they need to be returned by 5 p.m. on Dec. 12.
