A technical problem has forced the state of Nebraska to suspend driver's licensing services everywhere in the state.

A state news release Monday says a power surge during changes for a new system created the problem.

The Department of Motor Vehicles says the suspension will continue until the problem is fixed.

Department director Beverly Neth said Monday that the problem will not affect law enforcement agencies' ability to check license records.

The new system is aimed at making the Nebraska license more secure to prevent fraud and identity theft.

Under it, cards will be mailed from a state processing center within five to seven business days. Applicants will get a 30-day temporary document to use as a license or identification card.
