ADAMS — On June 23, Mike Brown, who lives on an acreage near Princeton, bought the local supermarket, Super Foods.

Brown, a Texas native, has no ties to Adams. Neither does his wife, Cindy.

But Brown does have a background in the grocery industry and spent years in the wholesale meat industry. Most recently, he owned Midwest Food Marketing.

He also has a 10-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter, and his work with Midwest Food Marketing meant spending days away from home at a time.

So he started looking around for a business venture closer to home.

He found Super Foods.

The store was profitable when he bought it, he said, but that wasn’t the only reason he chose Adams as his new base of operations.

“What really drew me to it was the support of the community,” he said.

Adams residents make a point to support the store, he said, even though Beatrice and Lincoln are both nearby.

In the past two months, he’s added new paint and flooring, and he replaced a dog food display in the front window with a shiny new ice cream machine.

A dry storage room in the back of the store is under construction, as is a meat counter.

He’s used Leon’s Food Mart in Lincoln as an example, he said, asking the staff for advice and even painting the walls of Super Foods a similar shade of green. He’s also been responsive to customers, he said, adding items that they requested to his inventory, and carrying out groceries.

“We try to make everybody happy,” he said.

He’s received a warm response so far, he said.

Adams has received the same from him.

“It’s just a nice, nice town,” he said. “It really, really is.”
