Dennis Frank Macek of Lincoln, a former college English teacher, novelist and air-conditioning technician, has filed as a Republican candidate for the Senate seat now held by GOP Sen. Deb Fischer.

"My candidacy is predicated on real, proactive, pragmatic conservatism," Macek said.

"My aim is to save things, such as the federal budget, the global climate, our citizens' health and education prospects," he said.

"My campaign motto (is) smarter spending, clean energy, new business, no excuses," he said.

Macek said his "political templates" are the presidencies of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower.

Fischer is seeking nomination to a second term in the May 15 primary election.
