ALLIANCE — For sale: One school, 18 rooms, well-used, full of memories, on one city block.

And there are more particulars on the catchall, sell-almost-all Internet emporium of eBay, which has been put to work by Alliance Public Schools and its agent to sell Central Elementary School.

The district had closed Central and consolidated its enrollment to two other elementaries in town.

"We have had a significant loss of enrollment," said the superintendent, Larry Ross, on Thursday.

"We've lost between 500 and 600 students in the last five years, so we closed Central.

"We are, to some extent, a graying community," he said in explaining the enrollment decline.

"There are just fewer families with children of school age in the city now. It's just been a gradual process," he said.

He said the eBay listing has sparked about 10 direct inquiries to the local agent handling the sale.

"I get the impression they are serious in their general interest," he said. Whether they will be when they learn the particulars about the school condition and zoning issues, he said he couldn't say.

Stuart Simpson, the business manager, said the district had had trouble selling the school so agreed to try eBay. "We had heard of other school districts that had sold vacant schools this way," he said.

"We don't want it (the building) to end up coming down like other buildings in town have … the school board doesn't want to leave a vacant building in Alliance," he said.

It could be remodeled for many uses, Simpson said.

Other particulars on eBay: School with playground and small gym. Historical building, era 1913. Three stories, brick, on Main Street, 2.07-acre parcel. Boiler in good condition.

"Located in a very nice area — right in the middle of Alliance in western Nebraska."

If the $50,000 asking prices seems steep, there is a fixer-upper in Oxford Junction, Iowa, on sale Thursday and listed on eBay at $16,099.99. It already had 19 bids.
